Cascade SIGGRAPH Board Meeting
April 21, 2006
Minutes by Fran Zandonella
Please send all corrections to Fran Z.
Location
Lucky Lab, 1945 NW Quimby St. in Portland
Time: 12:30p – 1:50 pm
Attendees
Jeff Borg, Demetra Gilmore Arnett, Andrew Dennis, Fran Zandonella, Herc Silverstein
Minutes
Minutes from March (3/31/06) were approved.
New Business
Logos
We have 16 logos submitted for our contest.  Demetra had trouble printing them, so she didn’t bring
them with her to the meeting.
* Demetra will email the new logos to us after the meeting.
Donors
Jeff told us that our contact at the Art Institute, Andy Larkin, is no longer in the department that
gives out donations.  Jeff will start again with the new head of that department to see if we can
get some donations for next year’s events.
For next year, we definitely want to see if we can get support from local companies so we can
produce bigger meetings and be able to bring in people from other cities like LA and San Francisco,
etc.
S’2006 Materials
Jeff reports that we got some promotional materials from ACM SIGGRAPH for the SIGGRAPH 2006
Conference.
S’2006 Conference
Demetra and Fran are going to the 2006 International Conference in Boston at the end of July.
Demetra will be attending the PSCC Workshop on Saturday.
* Jeff will email Demetra the email address for Fran Mcafee so she can get more details about booth
duty and what will be paid for on the trip.
Future SIGGRAPH Conference in Portland
The Cascade chapter would love to have the SIGGRAPH Conference in Portland.  Could we do it?  The
Oregon Convention Center (or other potential conference location) would need to be able to support
both the Expo and the Courses/Papers/Panels/Sketches, etc.  Portland would need to be able to host
up to 50,000 guests during the end of July and beginning of August for an average hotel price of no
more than $150/night.
* Jeff and Andy will look into having the SIGGRAPH Conference in Portland.  Jeff will call the
Portland Development Commission (PDC) to see what the conference space and hotel space availability
in Portland is.
Old Business
Business Cards
Demetra will get quotes for printing up business cards.  She forgot to bring the quotes she has
already gotten, but she can get about 2000 cards for $60.  We want to have the business card
printing lined up for printing in July so the new officers have business cards for the S’2006
Conference and the coming season.
* Demetra will send the Board email with the cost quotes for getting business cards.
Committee Reports
Events
A BIG THANK YOU to the Programming Committee
Kudos to the Programming Committee for all their hard work.  It has really paid off, and we have had
a great program this year.
General Info
Fran keeps track of the meeting statistics for the Annual Report that is due to SIGGRAPH and ACM at
the end of June.
Yearly Event Planning
The Board is challenging Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH to “dream bigger.”  We will have a brain storming
“dream session” after elections in July.  This will be a separate meeting from a Board meeting or a
regular Programming meeting.  We will need at least 2 hours.  One idea that Fran mentioned was to
have an IMAX meeting.
April Meeting, Bring Your Own Art, April 3, 2006
This event was very successful.  We had at least 70 people attend.  The speakers were very
interesting and all had different types of artwork to show.
Notes for next year are:
1) Hold it in a bigger location.  Possibly PNCA?
2) Do it on a First Thursday.
3) Have 1 or 2 invited artists.
April Meeting, Social Hour at Huber’s, April 20, 2006
This was also a successful event.  We had 5 tables full of people.
* Andy will email Fran will the number of people who attended this event.
May Meeting, Using Sound with Computer Graphics, May 18, 2006
Kirsten Pedersen proposed this event.  She saw a similar talk at Portland Music, and they are
willing to put it on again for us.  The venue will probably be Portland Music.  Our contact is “Q.”
Another possible venue is the Apple Store.  Other potential speakers are Vance on mixing video for
the play that was shown at the Bring Your Own Art night, and someone who does sound at Weiden &
Kennedy.  Kirsten knows someone at W&K.  Andy mentions Helix Open Source Real Audio.
June Meeting, The Evolving World of 3D Modeling, June 22, 2006
Mark Macey knows some people who could speak about this.
We’d like a sponsor so we can have a nice venue for this event.  We can fall back to holding it at
the new PCC auditorium, if needed.  We want high tech futuristic stuff – something from Emerging
Technology.  Is Intel doing anything on this front?
* Herc will contact Intel to find out if they are doing anything on the 3D Modeling front.
* Demetra will talk to Mark Macey to help get this meeting going.
Note that elections will happen at this meeting.
July Social, July 24, 2006
Andy proposes that we hold this social outside at the On Deck Sports Bar (910 NW 14th Avenue).
Nominations & Elections
It is time to send out announcements to seek nominations for elections, and to inform people about
the upcoming elections in June.
* Fran will write up some election announcements and send them to Jeff.
We need bios by May 10, 2006.  Bios should be kept to 100 words.
We need to create election forms, ballots, and post the election deadlines.
* Fran will create election forms, ballots, and post the election deadlines.
Membership
We now have 56 members + 2 new members (from last night).
Financial Report
No new report for this month.
Website
Herc mentions that we can use the twiki for writing up our website planning ideas and notes.
* Herc will start up a twiki page for our website ideas.
* Fran will link the twiki into our main website.
While we want to do some major website redesign, we are also looking for a webmaster who can
regularly maintain the website.
Next Meeting
Our next proposed meeting is May 19th, 2006 at 12:30 pm,
Lucky Lab, 1945 NW Quimby St. in Portland
The meeting adjourned at 1:50pm.
